Books can be borrowed for 3 weeks or 10 days. There is a wide range of fiction and non fiction books available. There are also books for children and young adults. If your library does not have the book you want you can reserve it for free from another Northumberland Library.

Large Print Books

Large Print books are available in all libraries. Using a font of at least 16 points in size, large print titles are perfect for people who have poor vision.

Large print books are listed in the library catalogue. You can search for all large print books or you can type in a specific title and the large print option will also be shown.


A number of libraries provide audiobooks in CD and MP3 formats. Audiobooks are listed in the online catalogue as 'spoken word'. Audiobooks cost £1.20 to borrow but are free to borrow for children, concessions, partially sighted and blind people.  

We also have over 100 eAudio books available for download to your PC or mobile device for free.  You can borrow up to 6 eAudiobooks at once.  Find out more about eAudio.

The charity Listening Books also offers an audiobook service for adults and children who struggle to hold  or read printed books.

The RNIB offers a Talking Books Service.  It is free to use and to be eligible to join the service you have to be a UK resident who is blind, partially sighted, or have an impairment that prevents or limits you from reading standard print.   They have 23,000  titles available by digital download to your favourite device through RNIB Overdrive, or on DAISY CD and USB stick, delivered direct to your door. 


CDs can be borrowed for 1 week for £1. Our collection covers all music genres, including pop, rock, classical, country, folk, easy listening, soundtracks and world music.

Children's Items

All of our libraries provide children's books. Fines for children are charged at a reduced rate.  As well as books, libraries have large print and audiobooks for children.

eBooks and eAudio

eBooks and eAudio are available to download free for library members.  

We have over 100 eAudiobooks that you can download for free.  Bring up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel, I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella, The Girl You left Behind by Jojo Moyes and Matter by Iain M Banks are just a small selection of what is available.

A Game of Thrones Series, The Man in the High Castle by Phillip K Dick, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, Clean Eating Alice, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Personal by Lee Child are just some of the eBooks we currently have.

Library members can now download digital magazines for free.  

You can choose from over 30 popular magazine titles.  List of titles include: Good Housekeeping UK, Cosmopolitan UK, Kitchen Garden, BBC Good Food, Digital Photographer, Health and Fitness and more. There are no loan period or overdue fees, so magazines can be read at your leisure!  Once you have downloaded the magazine you can keep it for as long as you wish.

A number of libraries have Playaways which are pre-loaded digital audio players. These are compact, easy to use and portable so they can be taken anywhere. Playaways do not need discs or downloads - just play and go. All you need is an AAA battery.

Playaways are listed in the library catalogue with [electronic resource] beside the title. Please note that Playaways will not be shown under the 'spoken word' filter in the library catalogue.

Playaways are available at most of our larger libraries including Ashington, Berwick, Blyth, Cramlington, Hexham, Morpeth, Ponteland and Prudhoe.Playaways cost £1.20 to borrow but are free to borrow for children, concessions, partially sighted and blind people.  

Special Collections

Northumberland Libraries holds a number of special collections such as the Northern Poetry Library and Memory Boxes as well as having vocal scores and play scripts.  All special collections can be borrowed.
