Joining the Library and General Information

How do I join the Library?

You can join the library by visiting any of our Libraries in person.  You can also  join the library by filling in the online form.  You will be emailed your temporary library card number and you will choose your own PIN.  You will receive your library card and permanent ID in the post within 2-3 working days. 

You can use your temporary library card number and PIN straightaway to access your online account and reserve books.

Once you have received your library card.  You will then be able to download eBooks and eMagazines.  Alternatively, if you need your permanent library card number sooner, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If you are under 16 and want to borrow or request DVDs, CDs, or audiobooks, you will either need proof of age or a parent/guarantor will need to come to the library with you.

If you are under 16 and want to use the library computers, you will need to come to the library with your parent/guarantor.

What can I borrow from my library?

How long can I keep items?

3 weeks for books and audiobooks (10 days for best-selling items)
1 week for CDs
1 week for DVDs
1 day for some DVD feature films

Can I keep items for a longer time?

You can renew borrowed items if no one else has requested them. Renewing Audiobooks, CDs and DVDs will attract an additional loan charge.  Renewals can be made online by clicking here or by ringing 01670 505016.  You can also renew items in person at any Northumberland Library.

Can you remind me when my loans are due?

If you choose email as your method of notification we will email you three days before your items are due back.  Giving you enough time to return them or for you to renew your items online or in person.

Which Libraries can I use?

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for borrowing books, but there are rental charges for borrowing other items such as audiobooks and DVDS. Charges are made if you return items late. Children's items borrowed on an adult ticket are charged at the adult overdue rate. Concessionary rates apply to some library charges.

How do I help prevent my items becoming overdue?

  • Switch to email notification and you will be sent reminders 3 days before your books are due for return. Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or ask a member of library staff. You will also be notified by email if you have any reservations to pick up.
  • You can also renew and reserve items online yourself with your library card and PIN.  If you need a PIN please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or ask a member of library staff.

Renewing and Reserving Items

How do I renew Library Items?

Online

It's quick and easy to renew your items online  - just follow the instructions below.

  1. Click here to renew your items.
  2. Enter the 14 digit number on the back of your library card and your library PIN number.  Then click on the red box 'list charged items'.
  3. Tick the box next to the item that you want to renew, or tick 'renew all' if you want to renew all of your items. This is situated at the top above all listed items.
  4. Click 'Renew Selected Items' in the red box.
  5. You will be shown a ‘your item was renewed’ confirmation screen with a new return date for your item.  This can be written on the date label in the front of your book.
By Telephone

You can also renew your items by telephoning 01670 50 50 16.  Please note that this is an automated system and you will need your library card number.  If you prefer you can telephone any Northumberland Library during normal library opening hours and renew your items.

Renewing in Person

Library staff can renew your items when you visit the library. You do not even have to bring in your item to be renewed.  Please note library staff can only renew items they have not seen 5 times. If you require it to be renewed more than this you will need to bring the item in to get renewed.

How do I reserve Library Items?

Online

The library catalogue allows you to reserve items for free.

  1. Search for the item that you want in the library catalogue. Click on the item you want.
  2. Click on the 'place reservation' link.  (This is usually the first link on the left under the book cover image.)
  3. Enter your library card number and PIN and choose your pick-up library.  Click on 'place reservation' in the red box to confirm your reservation.  You will then see a message to tell you whether your reservation has been successful or not.
  4. You will receive a confirmation email, text message or phone call depending on your notification method when your item is ready for pick-up.
  5. Up to 20 items can be reserved at one time. 
By Telephone

If you prefer and there is a book that you want, you can telephone your local library to reserve it for free. 

In Person

You can call in to the library in person and get a member of library staff to reserve the items you want.

Library PIN Numbers

How do I get a PIN?

If you have added your email address to your library account you can get or reset your PIN by visiting the library catalogue.  If you would like to add your email address to your library account please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or alternatively contact any library during library opening hours by telephone or in person.

You can also get a PIN by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or alternatively by contacting any library during library opening hours by telephone or in person. You will be asked for your library membership number and to confirm your personal details.  Your library membership number can be found on the back of your library card.

Once you have your PIN you will be able to access your library account online where you can renew, reserve items and download eBooks. 

How do I change my PIN?

If you would like to change your PIN to something more memorable please visit the online catalogue and follow the instructions.  Please note you will need to know your PIN to do this.

What do I do if I have forgotten or lost my PIN?

If you have added your email address to your library account you can reset your PIN by visiting the library catalogue.  If you would like to add your email address to your library account please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or alternatively bcontact any library during library opening hours by telephone or in person.

Or you can get a new PIN by contacting any library during library opening hours by telephone or in person.  You can also email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and request a new PIN. Please note: If you are already a library member please do not fill in the "join the library form" online if you require a new PIN.

How do I log in to my library account online?

  1. Click here to login to your account
  2. Then click on the option review my account.

How do I search the Library Catalogue online?

It is very easy to search the library catalogue to find what you are looking for.  Just type in the title or author you are looking for in the search box and click search. You can narrow down your search by changing the drop down box to a specific search - author, title, subject or ISBN.

If you get too many results or need a more detailed search then try the advance search which is situated in the menu across the top.  This allows you to search by item format, year of publication and many more options.

Other Questions

How do I download eBooks and eAudio?

If you require help using RBDigital eBooks and eAudio please visit the eBooks and eAudio help.  All you need to use eBooks and eAudio is your 14 library membership number and not a PIN to register.  Then you will set up your own username and password to use the service.

How do I download eMagazines?

You must be a member of Northumberland Libraries before you can borrow eMagazines. You will need your library membership number (the 14 digit number on your library card) to download eMagazines. Find out more information on eMagazines.
