The Cowpen Library that is situated within The Blyth Academy is to become a school only library from December 1.
For potential pupil safeguarding issues and because of the extremely low and declining public usage, a mutual decision was taken by Active Northumberland who operate the library service, and The Blyth Academy (sponsored by Northern Education Trust) to withdraw the library facility to the public.
Although the library is extremely well used by the school students, on average just eight adult books are issued by the library each week.
The school library will continue to provide an excellent information service and a wide range of books to encourage reading for both academic and pleasure purposes for the students and staff of the academy. Children from the local feeder primary schools with which the academy enjoys close links will continue with their weekly visits to the library.
Alternative access to the library service will be provided for the public by the neighbouring library in Blyth town centre at Blyth. This is one of Northumberland’s main hub libraries. It is open six days a week and offers a full range of services to the public including a new dedicated Local and Family History collection and a large number of public access computers.
Additionally Northumberland libraries services can be accessed online 24/7 through the www.mylibrary.co.uk website. Books can be reserved for free and collected at any local library and eBooks and eMagazines are available to download at any time.
Any resident with restricted mobility is entitled to use the home library service which delivers books direct to their home. Volunteers assist residents living in the county who are confined to their home due to a disability, long term illness or frailty and have no-one to visit the library on their behalf. The service is also available to carers who are unable to visit their local library due to their individual circumstances.
